Dean Hughes, age 86, of Herrin, IL, formerly of the Cave-In-Rock and Elizabethtown, IL area, passed away peacefully at 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at his home.
He was born on June 24, 1938, at home in Old Shawneetown, IL, the son of Omer and Geneva (Dillard) Hughes. He was raised by his step-father and mother, James Williams and his mother, Geneva.
He attended school in Shawneetown, IL, and was a graduate of Shawneetown High School Class of 1957. He was always proud of being a Shawneetown Indian.
He was united in marriage to Patsy Jo Frailey on September 19, 1959, in the Methodist Church in Shawneetown and together they have shared 65 years of marriage.
After his marriage in 1959, he began working for his father-in-law, Ed Frailey at Cash Lumber Company of Elizabethtown, IL. He and his father-in-law also built many homes in the area over the years. After the death of his father-in-law in 1968, he continued to operate the lumber company until 1981. Then in 1983, he began wor
